New Stuff!

My new paintings are up! In these latest ones I’m using domestic symbols- so far doors and windows. I like the idea of using an icon of something, like a door can be just a tall rectangle, and a window can be just a square. I take the icon then abstract it a bit to intrigue myself, then add clues about what they are like doorknobs or window frames.

The images are simple so it makes me work to make them complicated with paint.

I had been wanting to work more personally and this is my way of doing so. The first one I did in this series is the doors, the tall one with a lot of doors. I am at a point in my life where I feel like I have all the options in the world. How could I possibly choose? I see all these great things to do, non of them are necessarily better than another just different. I made them all different reds because I want a red door when I have my own place. Because that is something that I see as a positive thing the painting with all red doors means that all the options could be what I want. I feel like all these options happen at any one given moment in time. That is why all the doors are on one plane. There is no overlapping, so there is no sense of time passing. There is some value difference but it doesn’t always match with correct perspective. SO MANY DOORS! SO many great things to do!

Claremont Art walk part II

Well I wasn’t planning on showing in the artwalk again until the summer when I had some new stuff and smaller paintings. BUT a few days before Michael Vargas of the Piano studio asked if I would like to show in his place. So I seized the opportunity to show (any and every opportunity is my attitude currently) and I had a great time. Got my pieces hung on the wall which was much more satisfying than putting them on a table in an empty hallway. There was a good amount of foot traffic and I got to talk to people about my work. A few glasses of wine, talking about my own art, people seemed genuinely interested, awww yeeahh. Unless that was just the wine that made them seem interested…

Lowes vs Home Depot

Yesterday I ventured past Home Depot a half a mile to Lowes. My excitement about this store is slightly ridiculous but C’MON it totally rules. First of all when I walk into home depot and ask for help getting down a sheet of wood that’s 4x8 feet the corporate slave can never leave their 5 foot radius so they yell helplessly at someone down the aisle and hope that that person can assist me. At lowes the employee not only got down my wood he happily got me a piece that wasn’t on top because it was flatter, he carried it to the back to be cut, cut it exactly how I wanted, made chit chat with me, and then helped me pick out the best side pieces; which by the way are about a third of the price and are better quality.

There was practically no line, it was cheaper, better quality materials AND on the bottom of the receipt there’s a nice little note that if by chance there is a product they carry cheaper anywhere else they will not only match it, but beat it by 10%.

Lowe’s you have won my heart. And yes I’d love to build something together.

The latest painting,
very different from my other pieces. I haven’t decided if I like the style enough to continue with it. As far as figurative work I like the idea of abstracting more than I have been. This style came out a little creepy although I see it as silly which is what I wanted. We’ll see what happens.
